MEDICAL BILLING - FAQ

  • Can you tell me what the law is in Ohio that makes insurers tell physicians what they will pay for a service?

HB 125 was signed into law in the state of Ohio on March 25, 2008. The bill will take effect in 90 days. Physician and hospital groups have been lobbying for this bill for a long time. This is a victory for medical providers who often feel helpless in the hands of insurance payers. Full fee schedule disclosure should have happened a long time ago. HB 125 states that:

     1) Every physician is entitled to receive a copy of the full fee schedule so that they will know what they will be paid for their services.
    2) It will also ban the selling or renting of a physician’s contract to another company unless the rental is disclosed and all the original contract terms are honored.
    3) It prohibits the use of clauses in contracts that force doctors to provide services at a lower rate than originally called for in their contract and 4) It requires all insurance companies to use the same credentialing form and credential physicians within 90 days.
    Congratulations to the medical community.
